Let's lose weight

26 year old female, mother of 1, lost 100 lb and now I'm here giving back and giving tips and tricks to others that need them.

Why We Need Nutrition School

There’s no two ways about it - people are confused about what to eat. The media is flooded with conflicting views on what’s healthy and what’s not, and every few years there’s a new dietary fad that completely contradicts the one that preceded it.

Remember the low-fat revolution of the late 1980s and early 1990s? All forms of fat were vilified as the cause of obesity, cancer, and heart disease. By the end of the 90s (perhaps because the majority of the public saw no reduction in their waistline) the pendulum swung in the opposite direction. Carbohydrates were the culprit, and people were encouraged to shun grains, starches, and fruit in favor of juicy prime rib and green salads. The list of diets goes on: Zone, cave man, South Beach, grapefruit … some are more extreme than others, but none have effectively cured the American health crisis.

To make matters worse, the supermarket itself is daunting and confusing terrain. Items we know as junk food are sold in small 100-calorie packages and are marketed as weight-loss friendly. Highly processed snack foods are artificially fortified with health-promoting vitamins and minerals. So what’s really healthy? How can we know how to eat properly?

The answer to this difficult question is surprisingly simple: educate yourself about nutrition. Every time we feed ourselves we have a choice, and as these choices become more complicated, knowledge about food and nutrition is the ultimate source of empowerment. The truth is that there is no one-size-fits-all diet. Factors such as age, gender, size, lifestyle, ancestry, blood type, and metabolism all influence a person’s nutritional requirements. The key is to identify which diet works best for each person as a unique individual. The more you know, the better equipped you are to make smart and successful decisions.

Nutrition schools, once a specialized education track primarily for registered dietitians and nutritionists, are now providing people of all backgrounds with the tools they need to make smart food and lifestyle decisions and become their healthiest. To accommodate people’s busy schedules and to make tuition more affordable, many nutrition schools now offer online and distance-learning programs. This option makes it possible for people to balance their education with their careers and other life commitments.

In addition to educating people about health and wellness, nutrition schools also give people the knowledge and skills they need to help others adopt healthier lifestyles. The health problems that America faces are unprecedented, and there has never been greater need for health professionals that can guide people towards healthier lifestyle changes. Nutrition schools like the Institute for Integrative Nutrition offer Health Coach Training Programs that help people launch new careers as Health Coaches. Now more than ever, people need support and guidance to overcome their health challenges, and becoming a Health Coach is a realistic way to enter this growing field and begin changing the world.

If you want to learn how to make healthier food and lifestyle choices and are interested in an education in nutrition, research the nutrition schools that are available in your area or online. Choose a nutrition school that teaches about many different dietary theories. Not only will this education help you take control of your health, but it may also inspire you launch a new career that fits your values and will make a positive difference in the world.

Diet Smoothies - Your Key to Eating Healthy

No matter whether you are attempting to lose weight or to maintain your current weight, the key to success is eating healthy. Without it, you are setting yourself up for failure. Being on a diet does not mean that you have to starve yourself to death to succeed. You must be able to make smart food choices and incorporate them into your daily routine of healthy eating. Here are a few tips that will help you in your quest for a healthier lifestyle.

There are many popular snacks available for people who are trying to lose or watch their weight and diet smoothies are a great choice for many reasons.

First and foremost, smoothies make use of fruits and natural sweeteners. Best of all, they taste great and they do not contain any extra calories that will spoil your diet. If by chance, they are not sweet enough for you, there are healthier natural sweeteners available such as honey that you can add to make them taste sweeter.

Smoothies can also be used to replace meals as they are a great way to make sure that you do not overeat while at the same time they provide you with all your daily nutritional needs. The good thing is that you are in control of the ingredients in the smoothie before you mix it and you can choose the needed amounts for your body and not go overboard with it. If you are concerned about missing out on protein, you can add tofu or a nutritional supplement like protein powder to your smoothie.

Make sure when you are using fruits and vegetables in your smoothies that you use the entire fruit. By doing this, you are consuming the pulp of the fruit or vegetable which is an excellent source of fiber for your body. Fiber is the reason why you get that full feeling after you have drank a smoothie and it also aids in digestion and it helps to support your body’s waste elimination system.

Remember when your parents always told you that breakfast was the most important meal of the day? They were right. If you choose to skip this meal, it can be detrimental to your eating healthy efforts. If you do not have a lot of time, breakfast smoothies are an excellent choice as you can prepare them in a couple of minutes and best of all, you can take them with you and drink them on your morning commute.

Last of all, one of the best advantages that smoothies have over other diets are that they are available in so many different combinations. Many diets fail because people get sick and tired of eating the same diet foods day after day and they end up quitting. There are so many different combinations that you can create with smoothies that you will never get bored with the healthy recipes that are good to suit your mood. By choosing to make smoothies a part of your daily routine, you are making an excellent choice to achieve your weight loss goals and to live a healthier life.

Foods that Will Help You Lose Weight

There are many people in today’s world who are trying to lose weight naturally because basically they are sick and tired of paying high prices for natural food supplements which are supposed to be natural, but end up costing them much more than the actual product that they could have purchased in a health food store. Some of these natural food supplements do indeed help you lose weight, but at what cost? The good news is that you do not have to spend your entire life savings trying to lose weight. What you need to do is to choose the diet that will work best for your body and stick to it. The most important aspect of choosing a diet is to determine the amount of food that you are going to be consuming and the ingredients that you are going to be preparing it with. When you are attempting to lose weight at home, there is no need to be on an expensive diet because the key to losing weight is to know which foods to eat that will give you the maximum desired weight loss.

One of the important things that you need to do if you are trying to shed pounds without purchasing a diet plan is to make the right food choices. Make sure that you choose the foods that are high in fiber and have no fat content in them. Oatmeal is an excellent choice in foods as it has a very high fiber content and it does not contain any saturated fats. Another advantage of this food is that it does not take much to fill you up, so you do not end up overeating. This is another problem that you have to take care of when trying to lose weight at home because too much of a good thing is still a bad thing for you.

You should also make sure that you get the proper daily amount of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. These foods are great for your body and system as they put natural nutrients into it that your body requires and they also give you antioxidants which help to strengthen your immune system. This will help you to feel your best and it will give you extra energy to do the things in life that you want to do. Always make sure to have these foods on hand, especially during the winter months when it is the peak season for infections and viral diseases.

Another thing that you have to be careful of when being on a diet at home is not eating too much of a good thing. This is one of the worse things that you can do for your body, especially if you do not get some form of regular exercise. Even though something is good for you, you do not have to over indulge in it to reap the health benefits that it will provide to your body.

Dieting Myths and Facts

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately one third of adults in the United States are obese. Approximately 17 percent of children and adolescents between the ages of 2 to 19 are obese as well. For many people, weight loss is no easy task. There are so many diets and exercise programs that it can be overwhelming. It is important to dispel the many myths surrounding weight loss in order to achieve a healthy weight. True weight loss begins with learning how to eat a balanced diet on a regular basis.

One common misconception about weigh loss is that eating carbs is bad. Starch rich foods such as potatoes, bread and pasta are an important source of energy for the body. People who are trying to lose weight should not eliminate these foods from their diet but rather should consume them in moderation by eating balanced meals. It is true that some carbs are better than others so change up your meals by adding rice, beans and whole grains to your diet.

There is a misconception that eating only fruits and vegetables will help burn calories and therefore help in weight loss. In order to lose weight, a person must consume less calories than the body uses. This does not mean that you must eliminate certain foods. According to the CDC, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables may lessen the risk of certain diseases, however other foods are needed for certain vitamins and minerals. The CDC recommends adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet since these foods are filling yet low in fat and calories.

People of ten believe that skipping meals will help them to lose weight but in reality skipping meals deprives the body of needed nourishment and only increases hunger. When a person sits down to a meal he may eat more food than he normally would have if he hadn’t skipped a meal previously. Fast food gets a bad rap for causing obesity but the truth is that the problems lies in how much and how often the fast food is consumed. It is true that fried foods such as hamburgers contain high concentrations of fat and calories so if you are eating these types of food as a staple of your diet, you will probably gain weight. Never eat snack foods such as potato chips straight from the bag

It is a common misconception that eating food in the late evening or at night will cause weight gain. The main cause of gaining weight is consuming more calories than you can expend. However, eating at night on a regular basis may eventually result in weight gain since people are less active at night therefore they burn more calories during the active period of the day.

Diet pills work by suppressing appetite and increasing body metabolism. The pills also work by blocking the absorption of nutrients. Diet pills contain caffeine which is a stimulant that discourages eating. However, diet pills, combined with proper eating and exercise can help lose and maintain weight but diet pills alone will only work to suppress the appetite while taking the pills.

Drinking water before or with meals will make you feel fuller therefore you may eat less food but water does not make you lose weight. Although water temporarily quenches your hunger, the full feeling wears off rather quickly leaving you feeling hungry again. It is true that fats contain more calories than protein or carbohydrates and eating a lot of fat will lead to weight gain. Not all fat is bad though. Animal fats are more fattening and the fat is more likely to be stored in the stomach than the fat of plants or fish. The body uses plant and fish fat more quickly than animal fats.

While it is true that you can lose weight by dieting properly, physical activity is also needed to slim and tone muscles. As you lose weight, your skin also needs exercise to keep it firm. The best way to lose weight and keep it off is through a combination of diet and exercise. People often think that fasting for a few days or going on a crash diet will make them lose weight. You may lose weight but fasting can be harmful if done incorrectly and crash diets can affect your health adversely. After, the fast or coming off of a crash diet, the weight lost is normally gained back.

Foods for Weight Loss

When you are trying to lose weight, it’s important to fill up your pantry and refrigerator with foods that will set you up for success. Before you hit the grocery store, start by clearing out foods that hurt your weight loss efforts. Here are the things you should remove from your kitchen:

  • Cookies, cake, and brownies
  • Chips
  • Crackers (where the first ingredient ISN’T “whole”)
  • Candy
  • Ice cream
  • White bread, rolls, and bagels

Now, it’s time to load up your refrigerator and pantry with items that are healthy and will help you lose weight. Use the below list as a guide. Not all of the items listed below will appeal to you, so be sure to pick up products that you will actually prepare and eat. For example, there is no point in buying swiss chard if you don’t like it. You’ll be wasting money and will likely watch it rot in your crisper.

Nuts/Seeds/Nut Butters

  • Almonds, peanuts, pecans, pistachios, or walnuts
  • Natural Almond butter or Peanut Butter
  • Pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, or sunflower seeds

Grains

  • Whole grain bread (Make sure the first word in the ingredient list is “whole”)
  • whole wheat pasta
  • brown rice
  • quinoa
  • oatmeal

Vegetables

All vegetables are healthy, so stock up on whatever looks good and is easy to prepare. Make sure to include veggies that you can grab and eat raw, like baby carrots, sliced cucumbers, lettuce and celery. Some vegetables are SUPERSTARS because they are loaded with antioxidants and vitamins. They include:

  • Beets
  • Brocollli
  • brussel sprouts
  • cabbage, carrot
  • kale
  • mushrooms
  • onion
  • spinach
  • swiss chard

Beans/Legumes

  • Canned beans, such as black beans, kidney beans, garbanzo beans
  • Green peas
  • Lentils
  • Hummus (perfect for dipping baby carrots!)

Fruits

There are no BAD fruits, so make sure to load up on your favorites. Like the SUPERSTAR vegetables, some fruits are particularly good for you because of their disease-fighting properties. They include:

  • Avocados
  • Blueberries
  • Cherries
  • Coconut
  • Guava
  • Kiwi
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries

Extra Virgin Olive oil

Edamame

Yogurt, particularly Greek yogurt

Avoid high-sugar yogurts, yogurts that contain lots of hard-to-pronounce ingredients, and those that contain high-fructose corn syrup. Starting with plain yogurt and adding fresh fruit is the best choice.

Eggs

Meat

Lean cuts of the following meats can help you with weight loss:

  • Free-range poultry (preferably organic or at least grain-fed)
  • Grass-fed beef (preferably leaner cuts, like sirloin or flank)
  • Wild-game, such as buffalo, venison, or elk

Fish/Seafood

  • Shrimp
  • Scallops
  • Tuna
  • Wild Alaskan Salmon
  • White-fleshed fish, such as cod, founder, halibut, or orange roughy

Salsa

Starting a Fitness Program

If you are beginning a fitness program, you may be wondering what to expect from joining the many people for whom fitness is a lifestyle. What you can expect will depend on a great many variables. First, you will need to establish the purpose behind your desire to begin a fitness program. People start a fitness regimen for many reasons, including the goal of losing weight or simply making health and wellness a top priority in their lifestyle.

If you are beginning a fitness program to lose weight, there are a few things that will contribute to what you achieve. How much weight you can and will lose will depend on how much you want to lose, as well as the frequency and intensity of your workouts. If you have lived a sedentary lifestyle and are not accustomed to working out, you may want to start your fitness program with the recommended fitness schedule of at least three days a week for 30 minutes each. But if you feel comfortable increasing the frequency of your exercise, try to incorporate different types of exercise workouts so you won’t become burned out by completing the same exercise regimen on the days you choose to work out.

Results you can anticipate from an exercise plan will of course be contingent on how often and for how long you exercise. In regards to time and how soon you can expect results, for someone who exercises on a regular basis, it is generally around six weeks. Now that’s not to say you will have lost weight at the end of the six weeks because, again, this is dependent upon your own individual exercise schedule as well as dietary habits. But the very least you can expect if you are exercising on a regular basis are subtle changes in your form and overall appearance. You may begin to notice things such as your waistline having a more pronounced hourglass shape or more definition and tone to your legs and arms.

If you are beginning an exercise program to remain healthy rather than for weight loss, these are still some of the things you can expect. Making fitness a part of your lifestyle is really good for you no matter what the reason. Just remember, don’t take yourself too seriously. Try not to become too anxious or impatient if you are trying to lose weight. Better yet, put your scale away. You don’t want it to become a distraction to your goals. Simply lower your expectations and have fun becoming fit.
